Killing Robots...Contra Style!

Posted by SinclairStrange - June 12th, 2012

Hey hey, I thought I would post up an update about another game I have in the works if people are interested =). It's being made for Robot Day 'ere in Newgrounds lands and it's basically all about destroying evil robots, Contra style. (With a dash of Gunstar Heroes and Alien Solider into the mix too.)

Anyway, yeah it's going to have (hopefully) around four levels, each with roughly three areas and bosses to beat, five weapons and a ton of explosions.

I've made a little video showing off gameplay of the first area:

(Excuse my bad playing, it's pretty late 'ere and Contra music. Not got around to composing music yet.)

Anyway, yeah I hope ye like what you see, and hope you'll enjoy playing it when it's released :P.

This is my most anticipated Robot Day submission now!

Wow! Well I'll be sure to add in extra explosions and destruction for you :3. Hope I can get it finished on time now.

I highly approve of anything even remotely resembling Gunstar Heroes! :) But... c'mon, Alien Soldier? Your game better have 50 bosses in it if you're invoking that name! A game with "just a dash of" Alien Soldier is basically just Gunstar Heroes.

Looks great, though! :) I guess it goes without saying that the ability to shoot diagonally would be a welcome addition.

Very much looking forward to this!

(I think Alien Soldier has about 30 bosses in the game...just to say :P,) but yes, I'm aiming for a boss-a-thon. (Around 18-20). It's more like Alien Soldier due to the short sections followed by a boss because flash wouldn't like to process long levels too much.

I was going to make diagonal shooting but in the end to save some time, I've made it four way. It doesn't really effect the game too much...and to be honest, it makes aiming easier in my opinion.

Thanks for such a nice comment though! More reason to finish this game :3

Directional shooting is such tough subject... Players seem to think that more directions = more modern, but really the constraints are what determine the gameplay. Let someone shoot diagonally and their approach to a boss fight will be totally different to what it would have been. Mega Man has to tackle everything based on pure left and right shooting, although I do have more fun playing games like Metal Slug which have up and down as well.

I agree.

I tend to find the games that just have left/right shooting is also geared towards platforming as well as the run 'n' gun style. I must admit I prefer up and down as well, just because it gives the game more control and less "cheap deaths" in my opinion.

As a kid growing up with Mega-Man though, I tend to like the greater difficulty that game provides, yet get extremely mad when I get killed when it could easily been avoided if I could of shot up. (Or of ducked haha.)

I though I would meet in the middle with this game, so you can only fire up and down. That way, it saves time, but also incorporates both elements of game play =)...I hope.
